Bamboo is a unique plant created magically by nature. It is one of the most robust and rapid growing plants on earth. Much of this plants popularity, is because of the remarkable natural antibacterial traits of bamboo fibre.
The antibacterial properties of bamboo are the most profound reason that bamboo grows so rapidly in nature. Because bamboo has an inherit natural barricade against bacteria, most varieties of bacteria and bugs that attempt to thrive on the bamboo plant are eradicated naturally on contact. Bamboo is one of the rare plants that can survive all that nature can throw at it.
Does the Manufacturing Process Destroy the Antibacterial Properties of Bamboo?
The most amazing fact is that the antibacterial properties of bamboo aren’t destroyed during the manufacturing process. When bamboo tufts are processed into bamboo fibre, the antibacterial properties of bamboo remain in the bamboo fabric. This is great news for those of us who love sleeping with bamboo sheets. In short, it is the cleanest, most hygienic fabric to make bedding out of.
Scientific Proof
Controlled testing and sampling by the China Textile Industry Testing Centre produced astonishing results. The tests concluded that after introducing bacteria to a specimen of woven bamboo fabric, a 99.8% reduction in bacteria was observed over a 24-hour period. In a different independent study by The Japan Textile Inspection Association, results proved that bamboo fabric could eradicate over 70% of introduced bacteria during a period of 24 hours. And that result was after an incredible 50 industrial wash cycles. Bamboo material will also combat yeast, mould and fungus cultivation.
No more smelly sheets
The characteristic antibacterial properties of bamboo naturally eliminates odours. As part of these properties, the yellowing of fabric caused by bacterial reaction is almost nonexistent in bamboo fabric. I decided to conduct an experiment of my own. 100% bamboo sheets vs 40% Cotton mixed with 60% Bamboo sheets. After a year, the fitted sheet with the cotton mixed through were visibly stained. The bamboo sheets were still a beautiful shade of fresh, pure white.
In conclusion, there is no doubt scientifically, or experimentally, as to the antibacterial properties of bamboo fabric. Thankfully bamboo sheets are also a delight to sleep on.
